The Captain

" 'The Captain'  is the story of my father-in-law who, for most of his life, piloted a ferryboat from Leland, Michigan, to North, and South Manitou islands. Day in and day out he made the run, as long as it wasn’t too windy to dock. He had close calls with freighters, saw waterspouts, and sailed in all kinds of weather, from thunderstorms to flat, calm summer days. There are even a few old black-and-white photographs of his boat breaking up the ice in the harbor. The captain is retired now, and his grandchildren are left to brave the perils of Lake Michigan. But when they do, they owe a thank you to old George. The lake was his home. And like everyone who goes to work every day, raises a family, and braves the elements building a legacy and a place in the community, George is a hero. "
